How it works

Time zones are offsets from UTC that change with daylight saving time, so there is no fixed number of hours between two cities all year. This converter does the honest thing: it asks the browser's built-in time zone engine (the Intl API, backed by the standard IANA time zone database) for each zone's UTC offset on the date you picked, converts your wall-clock time to the exact UTC moment, then reads that moment back in the target zone. That is why New York to London is a 5-hour difference most of the year but only 4 hours for a few weeks in March and October, when the two regions change their clocks on different weekends.

Please read this: results depend on the time zone database and DST rules built into your device and browser (the "viewer's system timezone database"). If a government changes its DST law and your system has not updated, this page cannot know. For dates around a clock change, a local time can occur twice (the repeated hour in autumn) or not at all (the skipped hour in spring) — in those rare cases the converter reports the first matching instant and the offset shown tells you which side of the change it landed on.

Worked example: 9:30 AM on July 15, 2026 in Los Angeles is 16:30 UTC, 12:30 PM in New York, 5:30 PM in London, and 2:30 AM on July 16 in Sydney — the table above shows every zone at once so date-line crossings are easy to spot.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the offset column change with the date? Because offsets themselves change. A zone listed as UTC−5 in January may be UTC−4 in July (daylight saving), and zones like Sydney shift in the opposite season. The offset shown is always for the exact date and moment you converted.

Does this use my own time zone? Only if you pick it. The "from" and "to" zones are what matter — your device's zone never enters the calculation, which is why the result is the same on any correctly-updated device anywhere.

What about half-hour zones? They are included — Kolkata sits at UTC+5:30 year-round, and the offset is shown to the minute so nothing is rounded away.
