HEX is just RGB written in base 16: #RRGGBB, where each pair runs 00–FF (0–255). The 3-digit shorthand (#RGB) doubles each digit, so #F00 is #FF0000. RGB mixes red, green, and blue light, each channel 0–255. HSL describes the same color the way people think about it: hue is the position on the color wheel (0° = red, 120° = green, 240° = blue), saturation is how vivid it is (0% = gray), and lightness runs 0% (black) to 100% (white), with pure color at 50%.
Converting RGB to HSL finds the largest and smallest channels: lightness is their midpoint, saturation is their spread relative to that midpoint, and hue is worked out from which channel dominates. HSL back to RGB reverses the geometry — chroma (the max spread) is derived from saturation and lightness, then split across the channels by where the hue sits on the wheel. Because values are rounded to whole numbers for display, a round trip can occasionally land one step off in a channel.
Named colors: CSS defines about 150 color keywords (red, steelblue, papayawhip…). The lookup here checks a built-in table of common named colors and only reports a name on an exact match — a color one step away from red is not red, and will show no name rather than a near miss.
Why does the same color look different in HEX and HSL? They are the same color in different coordinates — like the same address in miles versus kilometers. If the swatch doesn't change, the conversion agrees.
What about transparency (alpha)? This converter works with solid colors. CSS adds alpha as a fourth value — rgba() / hsla() or an 8-digit hex — where the last chunk runs 0 (fully transparent) to 1 or FF (fully opaque).
Is my color choice uploaded anywhere? No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on this page — nothing is sent to a server or stored.
