Dog Age Calculator

How old is your dog in human years? This uses the modern research-based formula — not the old "multiply by 7" rule — with an adjustment for your dog's size.

How the modern dog-age formula works

The "one dog year equals seven human years" rule is a myth — dogs mature much faster than that early on, then age more slowly. In 2019, researchers at the University of California San Diego published a formula based on DNA methylation (an epigenetic "clock" that changes with age in both dogs and humans), derived from Labrador retrievers:

Human years = 16 × ln(dog's age) + 31

Under this formula a 1-year-old dog is already about 31 in human terms — which matches reality: dogs can reproduce by age one, something no 7-year-old human-equivalent could do. After that fast start, each additional dog year adds fewer human years than the one before. For puppies under one year, this calculator scales toward the widely used estimate that a dog's first year equals roughly 15 human years.

Why size matters: it's one of the odd facts of dog biology that small breeds generally live longer than giant ones — the reverse of most mammals. This calculator applies a modest size adjustment to the research formula: small dogs a little slower than the Labrador baseline, large dogs a little faster. Treat it as a rough correction, not a precise breed-specific figure.

Please note: this is a general-information estimate for curiosity only. It is not a veterinary or medical assessment, and it can't describe your individual dog's health or expected lifespan — breed, genetics, weight, and care all matter a great deal.
