How the counts work

Words are runs of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters counts everything including spaces; the no-spaces figure strips all whitespace out. Sentences are counted at each sentence-ending mark (. ! ?) that wraps up actual text, and paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed for non-technical text. Speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation and narration pace. Both are estimates — dense technical material reads slower, and a practiced speaker runs faster.

Keyword density shows each frequent word's share of all the words found: a word used 30 times in a 1,000-word piece has a density of 3.0%. Words are matched case-insensitively, and counts use letters, digits, and apostrophes, so "don't" counts as one word.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere? No. The counting runs entirely in your browser on this page — nothing is sent to a server or stored.

How long is a 5-minute speech? At roughly 130 words per minute, about 650 words. A 10-minute talk is around 1,300 words.

Why does my word processor show a slightly different count? Tools differ on edge cases — hyphenated words, numbers, and stray punctuation marks. This counter treats anything between whitespace as one word, which matches most editors closely.
